My Top 3 Essential Oils
Essential oils became very popular with the emergence of MLM companies like Young Living and Dotera, however they have been used for years. Many of the essential oils purchased by the US are used in food and cosmetic products, but as consumers we are told to be cautious. When I began studying herbal medicine, essential oils were not my first choice to research. I love tea so herbs and their use for healing with teas was my goal. As I began to hear about them from a friend and I got deeper into herbalism, I began to do my own research. This is how I figured out how beneficial they could be. This article will tell you about the oils I use the most and keep on hand since they can be used for many different ailments.
I always keep certain herbs on hand as an herbalist. Most of them are herbs that can be used for several different ailments or have a general effect on the body. Many of our recurring illnesses are related to microorganisms like bacteria, viruses or fungi. Our body responds to them with a fever and inflammation to fight the microbes. Therefore, the essential oils I keep on hand are antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal and can reduce fever and inflammation. Having oils with these properties will allow you to treat almost any condition. The three oils listed also have some level of pain reduction, are antiseptic and induce other cardiovascular effects like increased blood flow to a certain area of the body. These actions will help reduce symptoms and kill off the invading microorganisms.
My three favorite and most used essential oils are eucalyptus, lavender and tea tree. These essential oils can affect the body in a general way. This means they will affect body systems and tissues found all over the body. All of these oils are safe for children as well. I have been using each of these oils with my son. Most essential oils are safe for all when used in a diffuser. If you plan to use them on the body, there are some safety precautions to keep in mind. These three oils can also be purchased for under $15, making them very affordable for people ready to get started with little money. The only other thing needed would be a diffuser. You can find diffusers in places like Wal-Mart or Target for $15-$20. Most stores that sell essential oils will also sell diffusers, but you can also find them on Amazon.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
There is extensive research on eucalyptus so you can easily find this information with a Google search. Not many herbs have as much but I have seen that they begin to change. It stimulates local blood flow in the lungs and connecting blood vessels. This increased circulation brings more blood to the area, providing more cells to fight illness or inflammation. Eucalyptus works to dilate the bronchioles of the lungs. These are the smallest branches of the lungs furthest away from the mouth. Dilation in this area will allow the lungs to exchange oxygen more efficiently. It was traditionally or historically used as an antiseptic for infections. It is specifically indicated for asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, chest infections and sinus issues. Eucalyptus has been shown to relieve joint pain, stiffness and neuralgia. When applied to the chest it gives a warm feeling, so it is great for cold and flu symptoms.

Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender is one of the best known herbs and can be found in several different cosmetic products. It became common in the Middle Ages and was taken to the new world by pilgrims (so they say). It is antispasmodic, meaning it reduces muscle spasm, and can be used as an antidepressant. There are several studies on the effects of lavender on the nervous system. It has been shown to calm the nervous system by reducing feelings of anxiety and racing thoughts. Studies found it to be more effective internally when compared to conventional tranquilizers and less chance for toxicity or adverse reactions. Lavender has been shown to relieve muscle tension, tones the nervous system and encourages sleep since it works as a gentle sedative. This is the reason it is included in products meant to aid sleep.

Tea Tree Essential Oil
As one of the most important antiseptics, it was first researched in 1923. It was used for all types of bacterial, viral and fungal infection in various areas of the body. It is a natural immune stimulant which will help increase the number of immune cells and manage the response making it more effective. Tea tree was used in the past to treat yeast, acne, warts, fever and cold. It was used to treat all types of skin conditions whether they are minor or chronic. The crushed leaves were applied directly to the skin for treatment. Studies have shown action against infections like MRSA which has shown resistance to antibiotics. It is one of the more gentle essential oils with a low change of allergic reaction, which is why it is commonly used in skincare and cleaning products.
